D of E Award Scheme

All levels of the scheme are offered at Berkhamsted and at present over 200 participants are enrolled in the scheme making it one of the largest schemes in the country. Opportunities to complete all three sections of the award are offered at school but it is not essential for students only to use school activities - outside interests can also be used to complete the award.

The Bronze award is introduced in Year 10, the Silver in Year 11 and the Gold in Year 12. The clubs and trips associated with the scheme are all co-educational and students are encouraged to take part in both new and existing interests. Last year we are very proud to say that 74%of our students completed their award against a national average of around 50%.

Expeditions are organised by our own qualified staff to a wide variety of destinations.

The Bronze Award has a training week - held at Folkestone, a practice expedition in Thetford Forest and a final in the Chilterns. At Silver and Gold there are trips to Snowdonia, Dartmoor, the Peak District, the Lake District, the Brecon Beacons and the Yorkshire Dales, and at Gold, final expeditions to Scotland and the Italian Alps.

For service, students have the opportunity to be a member of our own CCF, help run a club for young people with learning difficulties, make tapes for the blind, find out about conservation and help in a wide variety of charity shops and homes.

There are numerous sporting opportunities that participants can use for the physical recreation section. All extra-curricular clubs offered at school are suitable ~ rugby, fives, netball, tennis, lacrosse, swimming, squash and aerobics to name but a few.

Again there is no difficulty in completing the skill section with a thriving music and drama department offering many options and other clubs such as Design and Technology, IT and chess arranged specifically for Duke of Edinburgh's Award candidates.

Why not come and join the FUN!
