The Sixth Form

The Sixth Form in Berlin
As nearly all of our students go on to higher education, the Sixth Form has a strong academic focus. A Level work is challenging and requires a high level of motivation and responsibility. Self-discipline is crucial, as is a willingness to be fully involved in academic study.

Sixth Form students will receive all the encouragement and support they need to achieve their potential in their A Levels, but they also need to commit themselves to working hard over two years.

The Sixth Form also aims to develop other interests and skills - academic, cultural, physical and social. It is a time when the individual can explore ideas and learn to think independently in preparation for university. Initiative, creativity and the enhancement of life skills will be encouraged. Essentially, the Sixth Form is an invaluable preparation for life in the adult world of learning, work and relationships.

The Sixth Form consists of eight co-educational houses. The head of house, together with a team of house tutors, oversees each student's academic and personal progress through the two years of study and prepares them for entry to higher education. Each house appoints a student house captain and deputy to coordinate house activities and represent students' views. This ethos encourages a more adult approach to learning, whilst offering the pastoral support appropriate to this stage of students' development.

Berkhamsted Sixth Form brings together senior boys and girls into a fully co-educational environment, as is most appropriate for the 16-19 age group.

Responsibility roles

Our Sixth Formers play a valuable role in the day-to-day running of the school community. In so doing they gain appropriate management and leadership experience and act as role models for younger pupils. They also have opportunities for community service.

Aims and aspirations

In the Sixth Form we aim to offer students greater freedom and independence appropriate to their age and maturity. With this freedom comes greater responsibility both for themselves and for others within the school community.

Sixth Form students are expected to show commitment and enthusiasm for the subjects they have chosen, self-discipline in organising their work programme and maturity in their general attitude and outlook. We expect all our students to have achieved at least five B grades and two C grades at GCSE, with a grade B or better in the four subjects they wish to study for Advanced Level. The majority of our students progress to a wide range of universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Location

The Sixth Form operates across the two main campuses in Kings Road and Castle Street, a few minutes walk apart.  Students have access to extensive common room facilities, study areas and a well-stocked Careers Library.
