We encourage all our students to become involved in a wide variety of voluntary extracurricular activities. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and the Combined Cadet Force are popular with both boys and girls and provide many opportunities to develop skills and self-reliance, especially through the major expeditions that are regularly organised around Britain and abroad. We arrange foreign exchanges, work experience and 'Young Enterprise' and our students perform to a high standard in major drama productions and concerts. Sixth formers attend lectures in London and eminent speakers are invited to Berkhamsted to stimulate debate on issues of topical significance.
Sport plays a central role in the life of the School. Students choose from a wide range of sporting activities such as: athletics, basketball, cross-country running, cricket, Eton fives, fencing, golf, hockey, judo, lacrosse, netball, rowing, rugby, shooting, squash, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Teams and individuals enter competitions locally and nationally with notable success. The School's sports facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool. all-weather tennis and hockey pitches, extensive playing fields, a boathouse on the Grand Union canal. tennis, squash and fives courts and two well-equipped gymnasia. In 2004 the Knox-johnston Sports Centre was opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, providing a large Sports Hall, 25 metre indoor swimming pool. fitness suite and a sports science classroom.
