Junior Cross-Country

With a tremendously talented group of Year 7 runners and the return of Charlie Insch, Jonathan Sherman and Matthew Symington to our ranks expectations were high. Chloe Allen (Year 7 St Johns) joined the squad and quickly established herself in the eight that would eventually take part on the day.

Chloe along with Hugo Leach (Year 7 Cox’s) and Sam Highfield (Year 10 Loxwood) all performed admirably at the Hertfordshire Schools X-Country championships the weekend before. Hugo and Sam missed getting into the teams by one of two places and Chloe, falling in the last 100 metres still managed to rise again and win her race. Congratulations to her and Sam Masters, Alex Howe, Charlie Wiles, Max Mowbray, Dominic Morgan-Hobbs, Charlie Insch and Jonathan Sherman for also taking part.

I.A.P.S Ellis Cross-Country

On a true cross-country running day the squad of Max Mowbray, Hugo Leach, Charlie Wiles, Alex Howe, Sam Masters, Greg Baxter, Chloe Allen, Jonathan Sherman and Charlie Insch ventured over to Habs for the day. After a short walk around part of the course and watching the Year 5/6 Prep School boys run it was our turn. Nervously the boys and girl lined up at the start. All the training on every Tuesday and Thursday and both inside and out came to this.

The gun went and soon everybody was pushing for places. Alex Howe sustained a nasty cut on his leg through the brambles but bravely continued. With mud everywhere they soon returned to the final field fuelled for the finish!

In the end the results were as follows, out of 108 runners.

Hugo Leach   8th
Charlie Insch   22nd
Chloe Allen   32nd
Greg Baxter   33rd
Alex Howe   36th
Jonathan Sherman  37th
Sam Masters   39th
Charlie Wiles   68th

Hugo deserves a special mention as to break into the top ten in Year 7 is staggering. Hugo has a lot of talent and we will keep working with him.

The team eventually finished 3rd overall which was excellent. Six of the eight runners will be able to run again next year. Chloe and all the boys deserve great credit for their perseverance through all the training.

A massive thank you goes to Mr Lansdell, Mrs Moss, Mrs Feord and Mr Warde for all the effort they have put in training the pupils.

Ben Evers.
