We aim to provide a good grounding in all academic subjects and encourage children to develop to their full potential within a happy, caring environment. We try to keep class sizes relatively small - usually up to twenty children - so that staff can offer each child as much individual attention as they need. Our general approach is progressive, yet we still retain traditional values and standards. Academic achievement is of great importance, but we also emphasise the vital role played by other activities such as sports and music in giving pupils a well-rounded education.
At infant level, children are encouraged to develop basic skills and gain confidence and independence. The majority of the day is spent with a form teacher who balances a grounding in literacy and numeracy with other activities such as art, drama, music and sport. Particular emphasis is given to reading as the cornerstone for each pupil's academic development. Classes are small so that our staff can offer each child as much individual attention as they need.
We find that the happiest pupils are invariably those where the School and home act in close partnership. Grades are given for effort and attainment based on performance in the classroom and in tests. Children sit the national assessments at the end of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 which help prepare them for entrance to Senior School. A system of credits and merits is in operation to encourage good work and behaviour.
