Equestrian Team report

The four members of the Berkhamsted Equestrian team who participated at Wellingborough, from left, Zoe Thursz, Lizzie McCrorie-Shand, Phoebe Baxter and Jessica Bennett.

On Wednesday 2nd June, four girls from the school team travelled to Milton Keynes Eventing Centre to compete in the Wellingborough School inter-schools show jumping competition.

In the novice ring, Jessica Bennett (Year 6 ) and Phoebe Baxter (Year 7) competed in the 2ft and 2ft 3”jumping classes, with Lizzie McCrorie-Shand (Year 9) joining them in the 2ft 3” to make a strong team. Lizzie also competed in the 2ft 6”. Unfortunately Jessica had a fall in her first class, but bravely got back on, and entered the clear round jumping, where she succeeded in coming home with a clear round rosette. Phoebe rode a lovely clear round in the 2ft, and had an unlucky pole down in the 2ft 3”, a great achievement for her first show on her new pony. Lizzie rode two great clear rounds, just missing out on getting a rosette in the 2ft 6”, coming seventh out of 38 competitors.

In the open ring, Zoë Thursz (year 9) competed as an individual in the 2ft 9” and 3ft class. In the 2ft 9”, she rode a clear round, but was not fast enough to receive a placing. In the 3ft, she was clear until the second to last, where she was pushing the time, but unfortunately knocked the pole. Overall it was a very enjoyable day for all the girls. For both Jessica and Phoebe it was their first time competing for the school, and they both enjoyed the day out and competing with the older girls as part of a team. They also could watch the bigger heights, and see what they would like to aim for at other competitions.
