Berkhamsted Girls achieve on the track

Success in the Achilles Relay for, from left, Becky Golder, Alana Zukas, Nicky Peck and Helena Ellis.

Berkhamsted Girls recently experienced success on the track with third places in both the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relays for the Girls' relay team at the Achilles Relay competition plus excellent results in the Athletics Hertfordshire Schools Combined Events Competition in Stevenage.

Achilles Relay Competition

The Achilles Relay Competition is a yearly event organised by our Principal on behalf of the Achilles Club, a club formed by past and present members of the Oxford and Cambridge Athletics Clubs. The competition was started in 1963 and attracts top athletes from around the country.

Berkhamsted girls entered the 4x100m and the 4x200m relay races. The team of Nicky Peck, Alana Zukas, Becky Golder and Helena Ellis qualified for the final of both events and, after running excellent times and breaking the school record for both the 4x100m and 4x200m, they ultimately achieved third place in both finals. This is a wonderful accomplishment - many congratulations to the four girls.

Athletics Hertfordshire Schools Combined Events Competition

On Wednesday May 5th, seven students from Berkhamsted participated in the Athletics Hertfordshire Schools Combined Events Competition in Stevenage. This event requires the athletes to compete in five different athletic events and an individual points total is accumulated.

The results of the overall competition are as follows: for the Under 15 age bracket with 60 entrants, Abigail Winterburn came in 36th, Lucy Alderson came in 29th, Katherine Irwin came in 27th and Anne-Marie Du Preez came in 2nd. Anne-Marie came in first in the 800 metre race, blowing away the competition and unfortunately missed the overall 1st place by 5 points!

For the Under 17 age bracket with 36 entrants, Emma Oakley came in 21st, Catherine Haigh came in 9th and Freya Burgess came in 5th.
