Physical Education

Physical Education is taught by ten full-time and 5 part-time specialists with an extensive Games Programme also supported by other academic Games Staff. As part of this programme, many teams from various sports and age groups regularly go on national and international tours. Examples in the last three years have included a 1st XV Rugby tour to New Zealand and Fiji, a Senior Lacrosse tour to America, a cricket tour to St. Lucia, a Junior Hockey tour to South Africa and a Netball tour to Malta. Pupils also gain representative honours at County, Regional, Divisional and International levels in many sports on a regular basis.

 

At Key Stage 3, boys take part in Rugby, Soccer, Hockey, Gymnastics, Squash, Eton Fives, Swimming, Cricket, Athletics, Cross-country and Tennis. Girls take part in Lacrosse, Netball, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, Tennis, SAQ (Speed, Agility and Quickness), Life Saving, Rounders, Personal Survival and Fitness.

 

At Key Stage 4 and above extra options are available and boys have the opportunity to choose various term-based sports including all the above with the addition of Squash, Weight Training and Rowing. The additional options for girls are  Aerobics, Squash,  Football, Volleyball, Badminton, Aerobics and in the Sixth Form Rugby, Weight Training and Rowing.

 

The School offers Physical Education at A-Level and this involves both theoretical and practical work covering a wide range of topics such as the social basis of sport and recreation, an Olympic case study, global trends in sport, scientific principles of exercise, sports psychology and, of course, a personal exercise programme. In 2005 ten students were entered for the AS level exam and nine for the A2 and at AS level, there were three A grades, two B’s, three C’s, one D and one E.  At A level, there was one A grade, three B’s and five C’s.
