The six full-time members of staff work together, supported by a technician, to create an atmosphere in which pupils can inform themselves of past and present cultural and multicultural issues and learn artistic skills of observation and expression in both two and three dimensions. Areas of speciality include Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture and History of Art. We aim to develop highly skilled pupils who have a broad and well-rounded approach to all aspects of art study.
A firm grounding in drawing is the keystone of our department and all members of staff endorse this in their own particular way and with their own varied approaches. The Sketchbook is viewed as the lifeblood of the department and is where every pupil from Year 7 onwards researches and develops ideas which eventually progress into logical conclusions. At GCSE and A-Level the sketchbook supports each coursework unit and at AS and A-Level pupils are given regular two hour sessions in Life Drawing after school: the opportunity to work from life is an essential practice for any artist and a perfect way to improve student drawing skills. Visits to various London Galleries and Museums as well as international trips and tours are provided as part of the well-rounded artistic education of all the pupils (eg New York City, USA and Florence, Italy).
Art is popular, highly respected and well supported both financially and technically and results have been consistently good, maintaining a 100% pass rate at all levels. In 2007 two A-Level students in Fine Art and three in Photography were in the top five nationally for the AQA examination board for the third year running! Each year many pupils go on to study Art at University or various Art Colleges.
